How do I bypass the neutral safety switch in my '70? It's starting to fail (i.e. Every once in a while it won't work, unless I jiggle the shifter). Maybe it's just the shifter, but either way I need it bypassed. The trans is an FMX which uses a special switch, dif from C4 and C6. The switch is something like $110 at some places ! Anybody know how to bypass?

I am not so sure you REALLY want to BUT, it's easy to do just put a jumper around it. All it does is open the circuit when the shifter is not in park. I have to have one even for my race car. I've seen folks at the track without them crank their car in reverse and run over stuff. NOT GOOD.

I know they are there for a reason, but i always do make sure it's in park or neutral before starting, and usually have my foot on the brake. It's just the cost of the damn switch that kills me. How about using another kind of nuetral safety? Anybody have any ideas on adapting something else instead of the factory FMX only switch?

Keep in mind that while YOU may know the NSS is bypassed, in an emergency if someone has to move your car they won't know. You may say "That will never happen." but life is full of "Gee, I never thought that would have happened!" and if your car would happen to run over a three year old you'd be cursing yourself for saving a buck for the end of your days.

Myself, I try to never leave myself open to that kind of risk.

I can't remember if the switch is on the shifter or the trans. I think I remember it being adjustable. If it?s on the trans, I have one sitting in my parents shed. I might even have a shifter there also.

The FMX is mounted on the shifter, inside the car, under the chrome shift indicator thing. oKay, maybe I can just find what years the switch was used and even try hitting up a junkyard or something.

Excellent idea. Even ebay would be a good place to source them.

I don't know if you saw this in the Racing forum:

Leon was running Randle Wilmons Nova Sun. & Randle had his S10 parked behind the Nova, Leon was removing cables at rear of Nova, Randle started the truck & it went wot in gear pinning Leon between them,it remained wo with the rear end spinning around to the right taking down another guy & over him all while pushing the Nova into another car. I was about 50 ft from them. Tracy Church is an EMT & she was right there over Leon before I got there. He was looking around & talking So I got out of the way. Ambulance took him to Tupelo for check up, originally thought he had some broken ribs, but both he & Randle's other driver (the one under the truck)only had some bad bruises & asphault rash. Very Lucky! Strangly enough this has happened to Randle before, but this is first time any one was injured. Mike did have some diamond plate polished alum. at the store, he also has a consignment shop there now too, give him a call. BC

I told Mike last time I talked to him if he wanted to go over my car completely b4 I ran it again he was more than welcome to. Since I took out a chunk of his guard rail. I know MY neutral safety switch works! Remind me to park a good ways away from Randle.

scary stuff. My first car, a GM, never had a neutral safety. When it stopped running, which did happen just once or twice, and even with an automatic I could make it move pretty well with the starter and the car in gear.

Mostly though it was another safety hazard. How about one from a junkyard SportsRoof? Mustang Parts may be hard to find, but if you're close with the NAPA guys they might tell you if its the same part as on a torino or something and you could snag a couple incase one doesn't work. You know, kinda like the three different models of dimmer switches work for a hundred cars.
