i found a tag on the engine that says

89 C 66 12
*-C 235-T

i dont know what the * is, i think its a 6.

does this mean im driving an A code, with a C code engine?

On the top line, the 2 of the 289 is missing. The C indicates Cleveland engine plant, {they made small blocks too}, 66 is the model year, 12 is the change level.

On the second line, the *-C is the production date, {March sometime} and 235-T is the engine code number.

Those are minor changes made during production runs. {Like changing from a 180 degree thermostat to a 192, for example. Most of them are things most of us wouldn't care about.}
