What's thread sealant should I use for my head bolts? ARP thread sealant? Permatex red hi-temp RTV?Also, can I use moly-based engine assembly lube between the bolt heads and washers for getting accurate torque readings, or is the ARP thread stuff something special?

What engine? The earlier SB &all FE Fords (maybe others as well)have blind head bolt holes, so sealer is not required. The later 5.0 HO engines do have head bolts going into coolant, so sealer should be used on these. As for the headbolt washers, I just use a dab of engine oil.------------------ 78 Fairmont 428 4 speed 10.20@130mph 80 Fairmont 302 5 speed 12.8@105mph 85 Mustang NHRA Stocker under construction, 302 5 speed 59 Meteor (Canadian Ford) 2 dr sedan 332, auto 74 F350 ramp truck 390 4spd

I usually use Permatex 'Hylomar'. It works for me. I purchased a generic tube of the gray/black moly engine assembly lube, and it looks like the ARP stuff. I used it on camshafts, and have used it on headbolts for an old Eagle Medallion (Renault engine), but use the ARP stuff on the hotrods... just to be safe. Seems the same to me, though. DOH No need for sealant! It's a 66 289, and has blind holes. Some antifreeze must have fallen into the holes and that's what led me to think the holes were into the cooling jacket. Guess I'll just neverseize the bolts and lube the washers and bolt heads with some fresh engine oil. Thanks for the replies, Rory and n2oMike!! ------------------ '65 Fastback

If using factory bolts, just use engine oil to lube the threads and head bolt washers, then torque to factory specs. If using aftermarket bolts (ARP) use THEIR torque specs, and use the appropropriate lube. They will give two torque specs... One for 30W motor oil, the other for ARP Moly Lube. The specs are for having the lube applied to the threads and washers. Don't mix and match.
