I was going to do the old clay-on-the-piston method for checking valve clearance, but I don't have a solid lifter. I've read that you can make one from a hydraulic lifter by taking it apart and filling it with washers. For some reason, I'd rather not do this to my brand new roller lifters. Has anyone done this to their new lifters? Or should I switch to another method, such as installing checking springs and measuring available lift per degree of rotation? Or can someone save me the trouble and verify that a Comp 284RF retro-roller will work with Edelbrock 1.90 heads and stock pistons (with reliefs)? BTW, thanks to this site, I've rediscovered my passion for working on the Mustang. Of course, my wallet realizes this also.

personally i would install the checking springs and use a dial caliper to measure the clearance. that is if the engine is assenbled. just my opinion, i could be wrong. good luck------------------ mike r racing is real everything else is just a game. 81 capri-7.51 @89mph 1/8 1.54 60 ft. http://prestage.com/site/site_display.asp?SiteID=141

I agree with the soft springs. Clay can give a false reading. Can you say 10 bent valves in my new AFR heads.Just make sure you check all the way through cam travel.

I went ahead and took apart two lifters and dropped in some clean 1/4" sockets to fill the gap, and reassembled them to make solid checking lifters.I clayed the pistons this morning, and it looks like I've got roughly .100 clearance without a gasket) so I should be ok, but since reading Radride's response, I'm going to go the checking spring route also. Thanks for the feedback!! ------------------ '65 Fastback
