What is a good HP figure for a fresh stock 390 GT engine in real world numbers?

Real world? Having had a dozen or so of them over the years, I would say that well tuned, with a GOOD Holley and a set of any headers, about 320-325 is right on. Good compression, great cam, decent heads, and a great carb made the 390 GT engine a pretty good deal. Weight was the greatest foe of the 67-68 390 Mustangs. 66 Fairlanes and Cyclones could hold their own against GTO's, 383 Mopars, 442's etc in their day. They pretty much dominated C stock and C/SA in 1966. It was the under rated 428 CJ's, 396 chebbies that would murder them. In case manyof you didn't know it the 396-375 chebbie as originally introduced in 1965 was rated at 425 HP. It miraculously lost 50 HP in 1966 without a single mechanical change. It took FoMoCo two years to learn how to play the HP rating game. 63.5-67 289 HiPo = 271 69-70 Boss 302 =290 HP
Yeah right.
