Who has them in their car and still listen to 8 track tapes? I had an idea about installing one in my 69. My Dad has an 8 track recorder so I could copy my cd's over to 8 tracks. What cha think?

How's the sound? Are you still using the stock speakers? I'm not going to get tapes from a flea market. I'm planning on making new ones.

I don`t know if they are still available, but (Somewhere!!) I still have a couple of adapters, that allowed you to play cassettes in a 8 track deck. One of my 70 Mach 1`s had the original AM 8track radio, with the oddball sized factory speakers in the doors. These adapters worked quite well, although I am hardly an audiophile. Personally, I really don`t like the appearance of "modern" looking stereo`s in older cars. Even my 59 has the original AM tube radio in it (still works, too!). I would never take it out to install a CD unit. Instead, if I was so inclined, I`d either put it in the glove box, or maybe under the seat.Or prehaps just put our portable "Ghetto blaster" on the seat for a road trip.------------------ 78 Fairmont 428 4 speed 10.20@130mph 80 Fairmont 302 5 speed 12.8@105mph 85 Mustang NHRA Stocker under construction, 302 5 speed 59 Meteor (Canadian Ford) 2 dr sedan 332, auto 74 F350 ramp truck 390 4spd

Well I've got this theory that may have been tried by others but if you start with quality recordings (cd's) and use a good recorder and low noise tapes, you may end up with a nice sound without spending $400 on cd units and adapters and such.

An interesting thing about the 8-Track tape player is that it was invented by Dr. Lear, also famous for the production of the 'Lear Jet.' His company is tied into Ford in other ways also: The sport-seats that came in the Mustang GT's, Turbo-coupes, SHO's and other high-performance Ford vehicles were manufactured by 'Lear-Siegler', again a Dr. Lear involvement. I'm not sure if they make the current seats, but I know they did in the past. Where are you going to get new, blank 8-track tapes? I was unaware that they were availible anymore. And I was never aware that there was an 8-track recorder made. One of the problems with the 8-track tapes was the poor quality of the tape used, which plauged cassettes when they first got popular. By the time the magnetic tape had improved and made cassettes a quality item, 8-tracks were no longer being made. Are you able to get blank 8-track cartridges made with the new, high performance magnetic tape? If so, you may be able to get good sound from the system. Just don't forget to take along a paper match-book, you know. You have to jam it under the cartridge so it won't skip! Remember that? Seriously, I'm very curious about the availibilty of new, blank 8-track cartridges, so let me know. Thanks!

Believe it or not, I've found 2 Ford am/fm stereo 8 track players that are NOS - still on the shelf, never installed. I've also located some blank Realistic and Maxell low noise/extended range tapes. They aren't new but they've never been used. Now, there is a guy in my town that runs an amateur recording studio and he records using high grade 8 track tapes (actually digital quality) before copying to a DAT machine and then burning to disc. This is much like the professional studios do it. I'm going to check with him to see if this is do-able.

I had an 8-track player in the '65 when I first got it. My bro and I were cleaning it out and he pushed on the front and yelled at me "woah, look at this, what the hell is it?" lol. I had a friend record some newer stuff onto 8-tracks for me which was cool, sound was ok but definitely not cd quality. Oh yeah, also had some fun for a lil while and used one of my bros amps and 2 12" CerwinVega subs and hooked it up to the 8 track player using some of the speaker outs . Bumping to old 8 tracks was pretty funny (a lady at work gave me a bunch and I bought some at the fleamarket, Olivia Newton John, mmm) .------------------ Tim M&M Member #35 1965 Mustang coupe, 200 I6, Holley 2300, Clifford header, true duals w/ 26" Smithys 1988 Mustang GT AOD vert, 15.810 @ 88.871 mph 100% stock w/ no traction https://mustangsandmore.com/ubb/I65Stang.html

Just for sh*ts and giggles I tried doing a search on eBay for 8 track. Wow, what bargains to be found. They had a new 8 track from the Who for only $5. Nobody had bid on it yet either. I had kicked around the idea of finding an 8 track for my '70, but then realized that it's not worth it unless you leave the car totally stock, which mine isn't. But if yours is, then install one, it'll be unique. ------------------ Gary M.- 1970 Mustang Deluxe SportsRoof (daily driver), 1946 Ford pickup, 1947 Ford pickup, 1957 Ford Fairlane 500 Town Vic

My stock radio has an 8 Track player. I found a couple of tapes last summer, Jimmy Hendrix, Janis Japlin (sp), along with some others. Only paid a couple of bucks for them. Don't know if it works and really have no desire to listen to it as I am sure the sound quality sucks - but it is a conversation piece. When people look inside the car usually the first thing they comment on is the 8 Track (I keep the Hendrix tape in the player). It's either "what's that" or "Man I remember those". So back to your question if you should install one or not... If you want to quality audio - don't waste your time. If you want a conversation piece - can't beat an 8 track.

That is a totally different 8 track machine. It's (probably) a reel to reel machine. It uses open reel tapes with eight individual tracks. The car (and home) 8 track uses a continuous loop tape cartridge with 4 segments of two track stereo.(4x2=8). Don't you hate it when your favorite song starts on one program and halfway through it drops out while the player switches to the next program? Tracy

Nope. It's a cartridge type 8 track - not reel to reel. My sister and I have used his studio.

Well, I said "probably". Pro studios use reel to reel decks and tape widths of 1/4", 1/2", 1" and 2". That "cartridge" system sounds interesting.Tracy

That's what I thought the first time I saw it. I was actually wondering what type of "junk" this guy was using. Come to find out it's top of the line. Here's one of them on ebay... http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2501973185&category=15199 [This message has been edited by 69 Sportsroof (edited 01-19-2003).]

Hmmm.... this uses Hi8 video tape cartridges. Similar to vhs & cassettes. It's not a continuous loop like the 8-track tapes this thread is supposed to be about.Tracy

Did you know that he also invented the first car radio? He was travelling to an auto show listening to the radio and wondering what to call it. Then it hit him, since he was motoring he thought of Motor-rolla. He sold the patent(s) and that was the begining of Motorolla. I worked for Bill Lear in the early '70s when he was developing a pulverized coal/steam powered Bus, a steam powered race car, and the Lear Fan Jet. A very interesting man that surrounded himself with talent. His wife Moya was a great woman to. SteveW

You know something - I think you might be right now that I think about it. Guess I need to give the guy a call... I know he does use an 8 track setup of some sort for something, just not sure now what it's for...
