Yup, you could have gotten a regular 428 in granny's Country Squire wagon. But even they had balls. ------------------ '70 Mustang Mach 1 - '72 Mustang Sprint - '94 F-150 Please remember our sponsors, Mustangs Plus, NPD, Osborn Reproductions, MyFordPerformance.com, and FordRamAir.com

The 428 is a tough engine to ID from the outside. There are regular 428s, Cobra Jets, and Super Cobra Jets. Isn't it true that Ford actually 'somehow' slipped a few 390's between the fenders of some cars that were to supposed to recieve a 428? I have heard several times that some of the GT-500's came with 390's 'masquerading' as 428s.

Yes there were several 67 GT-500's that were shipped with the original "S" code 390 that Ford put in them. Shelby bolted on the dual quads and let them go so delayed orders could be filled. An unexpected demand for 428's in the new for 67 T-Bird and a huge contract with the Feds took FoMoCo by surprise and Shelby was on the bottom of the list for recieving engines. Most, if not all went to Hertz.------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/IHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver MCA member# 53321 NHRA and IHRA SS/LA National Record Holder '00,'01,'02,&'03 Fleet of FoMoCo products including 88 ASC McLaren Mustang #28 Professional Manwhore The Barry of BarrysGrrl Quote #1: "I never met a magazine mechanic I liked." Unfortunately there aren't any.If everything is stock maybe but a 428 wouldn't be stock in a pickup so don't count on that.I bought a 390 out of a 66 t-bird,it had all the correct numbers, even had the little metal tag bolted on the intake that said 66 390.When I tore it down a couple of years later it was a 352 with a 390 intake

The only tell tale feature on a 428 in a vehicle is that they all had 4 bolts per exhuast port on the heads for the manifolds/headers.------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/IHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver MCA member# 53321 NHRA and IHRA SS/LA National Record Holder '00,'01,'02,&'03 Fleet of FoMoCo products including 88 ASC McLaren Mustang #28 Professional Manwhore The Barry of BarrysGrrl Quote #1: "I never met a magazine mechanic I liked." This is only true for the CJs.The standard 428s only had the regular 2 bolt pattern on each port.

Thats right, the big car 428`s used the same heads as the 390`s. Easiest way to check for a 428 is to do a stroke check, with a wire, or screwdriver in the spark plug hole. Put #1 cyl. on TDC, stick the wire/screwdriver in the plug hole, & make a mark where it touches the bottom of the valve cover flange, Now, slowly turn the engine 1/2 a turn, untill the piston won`t drop any lower, then make another mark. Measure the distance between the marks. 352& 360`s will be 3 1/2"`s. 390 will be 4 3/4"`s, & a 410-428 will be roughly 4"`s. ------------------ 78 Fairmont 428 4 speed 10.20@130mph 80 Fairmont 302 5 speed 12.8@105mph 85 Mustang NHRA Stocker under construction, 302 5 speed 59 Meteor (Canadian Ford) 2 dr sedan 332, auto 74 F350 ramp truck 390 4spd

Rory, That's a simple enough way of doing it! -- much easier than pulling a head off to measure the stroke! Ryan

Hmmmmmm They are small ports similar if not identical to a 390 GT head.------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/IHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver MCA member# 53321 NHRA and IHRA SS/LA National Record Holder '00,'01,'02,&'03 Fleet of FoMoCo products including 88 ASC McLaren Mustang #28 Professional Manwhore The Barry of BarrysGrrl Quote #1: "I never met a magazine mechanic I liked."
