Ok, here is what I'm getting. I go to start the '65 , the starter relay clicks and then I lose all battery power. I have to go and take one of the cables off then put it back on the battery to get the power to come back on. The insulation on the starter wire was melted due to the heat from the header but I have replaced it along with protecting it with some 2000 degree temp blanket stuff (the starter is already wrapped). Battery is fully charged. What gets me is the fact that all the power goes out after trying to start it . If it wasnt for that I would think my starter had heat soak (even through the blanket ). I've looked for any shorts. Thanks for any help.------------------ Tim M&M Member #35 1965 Mustang coupe, 200 I6, Holley 2300, Clifford header, true duals w/ 26" Smithys 1988 Mustang GT AOD vert, 15.810 @ 88.871 mph 100% stock w/ no traction https://mustangsandmore.com/ubb/I65Stang.html

Have you had your battery tested? I think a bad cell will give you correct volt reading as long as their is no load. After that it dropps like a rock.

Great minds think alike lol. I used a known good battery out of my 5.0 in parallel with the other battery and all I got was rapid fire clicking. Trying a jumper to the relay did the same so control side is out. I tried touching the starter wire to the + terminal and all I got was sparks so I am betting the starter is fried. Of course I have to pull the header to bench test/replace it .

You have to pull you header to get the starter out! I'm glad I didn't have to do that.. I think on my first 69 I was putting a starter in every 6 months (No more autozone electronics for me!).. Of course I had to put enough extensions on my rachet that is was up against the radiator.. ;p

Guess where this starter is from, yup, lifetime warranty Autozone pos After pulling everything apart (going to go get the new starter) all I can say is now I remember even more clearly how much of a pita this job is to do with the header . With the old manifold I could do it in about 10 minutes. Going to get some stainless steel hardware for the collectors while I have it all apart. ------------------ Tim M&M Member #35 1965 Mustang coupe, 200 I6, Holley 2300, Clifford header, true duals w/ 26" Smithys 1988 Mustang GT AOD vert, 15.810 @ 88.871 mph 100% stock w/ no traction https://mustangsandmore.com/ubb/I65Stang.html

I really hate the "rebuilt" products from the chain stores. I don't care what the warrantee is. Junk is junk! Trak Auto had a million mile warrantee on all of their stuff and now they are gone from the Chicago market. ------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/IHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver MCA member# 53321 NHRA and IHRA SS/LA National Record Holder '00,'01,'02,&'03 Fleet of FoMoCo products including 88 ASC McLaren Mustang #28 Professional Manwhore The Barry of BarrysGrrl Quote #1: "I never met a magazine mechanic I liked."
