I am curious - I installed backup lights on my 65, but can not find a way to hook them up. I know the standards have a switch the stick shift hits to turn the backup lights on, but don't know where the auto does this?

Thanks,
Brian

Guys, I've got a 1965 master wiring diagram/schematic... give me a while, I'll see if I can dig it out. I'm babysitting my little boy at the moment; once he's in bed, I'll see if I can locate it

Brian,
Your back-up lights get the signal from the neutral safety switch on the side of your transmission. Don't take this as correct, I'm doing this from memory, one of the first things to go when over 50 is the memory. Anyway there should be a red and black wire from the switch that that should be on the firewall close to the center main disconnect. You should get a wiring diagram of under dash wiring to find the black wire from the rear tail light harness, assuming your harness has one. Theres more to this, but rather difficult to put in words.

Brian, I just switched my car over from auto to manual and I was trying to figure out what the 4 wires were coming out of the firewall. 2 Blue/Red are Neutral Safety Switch, the other 2 Black/Red are backup light. Then I checked on the old C4, sure enough 4 wires coming out of the shifter switsh on the side of the tranny. 2 Blue/Red and 2 Blk/Red. Go to this website for wiring diagrams: http://hammar.dyndns.org/~djhamma/wiring.htm Then look at the 66 Mustang Exterior Lighting diagram and schematic. Shows it all.
There is normally a blk/Red wire that hooks up to the fuse box through a 3 plug connector and then went through the firewall, connected to the tranny and back through the firewall then all the way back to the Backup lights. The wires ran through the drivers side door sill. You could probably rig up a manual switch if you wanted to. Ernie

Yes it's in the neutral saftey switch. There are 4 wire in two plug in harnesses. One pair is for the ignition and starting, the other is for the back up lights.
