I am going to the 'Silver Springs' show in Ocala this weekend, and I would like to repaint the black coves on my magnums before I go. Does anyone know of the correct paint for this, hopefully availible in spray-bombs?

Isn't it just semi-gloss black?

It depends on the years. Early ones are flat, late 60's and early 70's are semi gloss and some are argent.

Eastwood Company has a paint they claim is the proper black for the Magnumn 500's. I haven't used it but if it is like the rest of their products, I imagine it is good. They also sell a set of masks for the 15" wheels to properly mask off the chrome and make it easier to paint. I am going to have to do my wheels before next spring, but I have 14" wheels, and I gues I will try to see if I can make a set of the 15" masks work. I seem to rember NPD having the Magnumn 500 paint also, but not the wheel masks.

Thanks for the paint info. BTW, I think that the 14" and 15" Magnums all have the same centers, it is only the rim-size that is different. So I don't think there are 14" & 15" masks. Is this right, or am I wrong.(again)?

I believe you are right on the centers, Kit.

I can't imagine using any color but semi-gloss black. I could never stand the argent painted ones, even though they are correct for the early '69 Boss 302.

Well, you know Eastwood, it may be semi gloss black, but they aren't going to call it that. That would be too easy and Krylon is too cheap at Wally World. They are going to call it a special black so they can sell it for $8 bucks a can or whatever. I'm not complaining though, cause they keep so much specialty stuff that I am glad they are in business. Thanks for the heads up on the 14' and 15' centers. I didn't know that, and they definetly list the masks for the 15' wheel, so I will get a set. Beats trying to tape off the chrome spokes myself.

Yeah, I think they only look good in the right black also. Sometimes I see them painted full glossy black, and they just ain't right!
Unlike most people, I do like the looks of the standard-issue (argent center-sections and chrome rims)69 BOSS 302's. They look different and kinda' cool.
A freind of mine in Idaho has a 72 Sprint Fastback with Magnums, and he painted the coves the blue that was on the rest of the car, and put a red pinstripe around the inside edge of the rim. Surprisingly, it looked really good. He and I had always talked about a NACA hood painted blue tu-tone with the red pinstripe border to match. I think that would look cool, and appear to be a factory effort to the uninitiated. He never came up with the chicken to buy the set-up though.

The ones that I just sold were flat black, not semi gloss. I know becuase of the pain in the a$$ the chrome polish used to be to get off. I bought them new in 1971 with the spinners.
FYI, that's all.

I wouldn't do that to the Magnums, but that's what I plan for my hood:

Now I have all the pieces!

Steve, I think your car will look excellent with that color scheme on the hood! And don't forget...the spec's for the hood paint in 'Mustang Monthly' are incorrect!
