I was going to install a passenger side mirror to match the original on the drivers side. It was recommended that I place a nut on the inside of the door for each of the two screws, but I cannot get my hand in there after removing the door panel. Is there a secret to do this, or did they originally install with blind rivets, etc. Thank you.

The originals were mounted with long sheet metal screws with a polished phillips head

On my small collection of 67/8 doors, the three driver's side doors have threaded inserts that go through two holes in the top of the door, and are then welded in place. These take the long screws. I removed a couple of these and added them to my passenger's door. I assume these are original 'cos they're on all three of the doors.
In my 2001 NPD calatogue, they have a photo of what I think is one of these inserts, but I can't see a part number.

Both doors on my 68 have them. Any idea what size screw or sheetmetal trim screw, or what ever, they take. The driver door is a remote.

If you can rent an aircraft "Rivnut" tool, a rivnut is the perfect solution. The tool fastens a nut into the sheet metal from the front side like a pop rivet. These come in a variety of steel and aluminum sizes. Rivnuts are cheap but the installation tool isn't.
