On a 73 Mach 1, is the front fender parking light bezel and surrounding sheetmetal supposed to be painted the color of the car, or should it be painted black or argent to match the surrounding stripe? In several pieces of Ford produced literature, they show both black and argent-striped 73 Machs with the bezels painted to match the stripe. But in the Ford advertsiement showing the 73 Mach, the bezel is clearly left the body color. Personally, I think it looks better if it is painted to match the stripe, and that is the way my brother did his 73 Mach. It certainly would have been easier for Ford to just leave it the body color, and I'm leaning towards thinking that that is probably what they did. Does anybody haver the definitive answer

My '73 has the bezel and surrounding metal painted semi-gloss black to match the stripe. I believe this is correct. I bought the car from a good friend who had restored it after buying the car from his brother, who owned it from new. He's the type of guy who would have duplicated the original detail in that area, not just painted it to suit his sensibilities. You're right, Ford photos show it both ways. It could be one of those "what day, how hung-over was the crew" details.[This message has been edited by RICKS (edited 01-03-2003).]

A friend of mine at the local cruises has a 73 Mach that he bought new, and is most definately and obviously original paint. It is medium yellow gold with black stripes. The bezel and area around it are NOT painted black, but left the color of the car. Another cruiser has a blue with/argent 73 Mach that has been repainted, and the bezel and area around it have been painted argent to match the stripe. He swears vehemently that the car had original paint on it when he bought it, and it was this way. If he is telling the truth, then Ford must have done it both ways. I'm still not convinced though. I really think Ford just left the production cars with the bezels body colored. I keep looking, though!

I'm by no means an expert on this subject, but I would have to agree with RICKS, whatever day it was determined which way you got it. My '73 has the area matching body color (although it is a repaint), but the original '73 sales brochure I have it shows two Mach 1's on the same page, one with body color and the other with the area painted black to match the stripe. Bottom line, I don't think there is a definitive answer.------------------ Duane 71 Fastback (his) under resto (351C-4V C6 auto) 73 Mach 1 (hers) (351CJ 4 speed) 66 289/2V coupe (daughter Ashley's) 89 LX 2.3 convertible (daughter Amanda's) M & M Member #730
