My 71 Mach w/ auto trans has the chrome shifter handle with the 'dummy' button on the right side to match the functional button on the left.(This car has the Mach 1 interior option)
My 72 convertible has the standard interior, and the same shifter-handle as the 71 Mach.
My 73 convertible with the deluxe interior has the same handle, but my 73 Grande with the deluxe interior has the handle without the 'dummy' button on the right hand side.
My 73 Mach(Mach 1 interior) has a shiftyer handle that has both the 'dummy' and the functional buttons, but also has a black plastic cover over the main body of the shifter handle that is designed to look like a stitched leather covering.(it is hard molded plastic, however). I have never seen this type handle on any other Mustang.
There seems to be a lot of mixing and matching from the factory as to what handle went with which model, trim package or year model. Anybody have any thoughts?

These are found on 68s with deluxe interiors, and maybe other years. I have one myself

That plastic covered handle came on a '73 coupe I had, and my Mach 1 has it too.

My 72 Mach 1 has the black plastic trimmed handle with the two buttons. The car was totaly original whe I bought it, so I believe it came from the factory this way. Saw a handle with wood grain once on E-Bay. would like to have had it cause it would have gone well with the fake plastic wood on the doors and center guage section.

I am certain that my vehicles are all as factory equipped, so I don't think any of the handles have been changed. I just can't figure out what the rhyme or reason is for the different applications.

With my Mach it goes with the deluxe interior, but my '73 coupe had a standard interior so I'm no help there.

Both my Sprint {standard interior} and my '71 Cougar {deluxe} had the chrome handles. All had the fake button on the right.
