I am wanting more power from my car...Right now, its an internally stock 289 with an Edelbrock performer intake, holley 600 carb, and hooker comp headers with dual exhaust. I'm looking for the most power for the money. I thinking about: massively porting and polishing the factory heads, or getting 351W heads and doing that, or buying some less expensive new heads to bolt straight on, or I could get a new cam and 1:7 rocker arms, or I could always get nitrous, but I do want this motor to last. Anyway, I sure many of you have done some of these things to your car and you know how much power each one adds. What do you think is the best thing to do without "breaking the budget". By the way, I'm not real experienced with engine work, so installation will cost too. Thanks in advance

If it's acceleration you want, a gear is in order. If you want power than a nice cam like a Comp 270S, some good rocker arms, and a nice set of aftermarket World Products heads will give you about a 50 HP increase for less than $2000 plus labor.------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/IHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver MCA member# 53321 NHRA and IHRA SS/LA National Record Holder '00, '01, & '02 Fleet of FoMoCo products including 88 ASC McLaren Mustang #28 Professional Manwhore The Barry of BarrysGrrl Quote #1: "I never met a magazine mechanic I liked." What gears do you suggest...right now I have the stock 2.79:1 open gears. Do you know of any donor cars that I could get good gears and a locker that would easily go into my rear axle? I want streetability, and "decent" gas mileage.

If it's an 8 inch then some 3.80's would give you the most bang for the buck.------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/IHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver MCA member# 53321 NHRA and IHRA SS/LA National Record Holder '00, '01, & '02 Fleet of FoMoCo products including 88 ASC McLaren Mustang #28 Professional Manwhore The Barry of BarrysGrrl Quote #1: "I never met a magazine mechanic I liked." 3.80 seems too much....I know it will make it a lot faster, but wont that kill my top speed and gas mileage? Also, Wouldn't that make cruising at 50mph require the engine to be turning 4000 rpm or something like that?

Not at all. My 3.70's turn 3400 rpm at 75 mph on 26" tall tires ------------------ 1965 GT coupe, 333ci aluminum headed/solid cammed stroker, four speed, 3.70:1 9" All Blue Oval, no blue bottle http://mustangsandmore.50megs.com/V8Thumper.html

Doesn't putting taller tires on lower the rpms at any given speed over shorter tires?

With a 27 inch tall tire and 3.80's you will turn no more than 3k RPM at 60 MPH. Probably a bit less.------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/IHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver MCA member# 53321 NHRA and IHRA SS/LA National Record Holder '00, '01, & '02 Fleet of FoMoCo products including 88 ASC McLaren Mustang #28 Professional Manwhore The Barry of BarrysGrrl Quote #1: "I never met a magazine mechanic I liked." You suggested the Comp 270S cam. I know for this, I would also need to get new rockers and timing chain and lifters. Is a stall converter an absolute must? Also, the main question: how much hp would this cam add?thanks again

Could buy a blower, especially if your compression is lower than 9 - 1. One of my friends put one on a run of the mill Chevy 350, all he did was tune the carb. Engine ran great for at least a thousand miles before it melted a hole in two pistons Whats the going rate for a good investment, 1 HP per $10 spent? Street, my first time through I started buying all the "acessories" which would swap from the engine I had to the engine I wanted or were not affected by a motor swap. Gears, Exhaust, Intake/carb, a new tranny. I hate doing internal engine work any more than I have to because if you goof it can cost big bucks.
