I have just finished building my third c-4 (and have taken apart about 10), and as I get more "into" the c-4s it brings up alot of questions. I did some reading today and am trying to understand what are the differences in V-8 C-4s and the one intended for six cyl applications. Is it just the servo ? the last 2 that I took apart have a Z on the servo cover. Does this Z mean Mustang ? or does it have to do with the servo, valve body or what ? Both trans had 1965 greendot valve bodies. Also the number of clutch and friction plates were different trans to trans. Did someone put the wrong number of plates in or are they stacking them up to the point that the clutch pak? is full up the the point that you install the locking ring ?

V-8 and 6 cylinder servo's are indeed different. Also then clutch packs are stacked with 3&3 for 6 cylinders normally, 4&4 for V-8's and 5&5 for rare 289 HIPO transmissions. Other than that most of the componants are the same. Post 1970's also had stronger 26 spline input shafts and a heavier duty pump. Pre 1970 Econoline C-4's also used HD componants and a special front pump.------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/IHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver MCA member# 53321 NHRA and IHRA SS/LA National Record Holder '00, '01, & '02 Fleet of FoMoCo products including 88 ASC McLaren Mustang #28 Professional Manwhore The Barry of BarrysGrrl Quote #1: "I never met a magazine mechanic I liked." I was thinking that the pre 70's were 24 spline, then went to 26. The 65 trans I just built has 24. I stacked up 4 & 4 in this last trans. I am planning on using it behind a 6 cyl. If I did it 3 & 3 there would be quite a large gap between the plates and the locking ring. Wouldn't the trans slip ? and were the 3 & 3 individually thicker, to make up the gap ? Any help would be appreciated. When I tore it down, One section had 4 &4, and the other 5&5. 4&4 would only fit back in it where the 5&5 was. Sorry about not knowing the names of all these components. Still learning. Thanks, Greg

DUH! Sorry about that. I meant to say "POST" 70's have the 26 spline input. You can get 4&4 in every drum. You need to have about .040 to .50 wet clearance assembled for a stock trans. To get 5&5 back in you have to mich the clutches and steels as they are selective thicknesses. By mixing up the steels you can get enough clearance. I always cut another snap ring grove higher up and install 5 clutches and plates. I like my clearances much wider than recomended. You can take it to a machine shop if you don't have access to a lathe. They usually only charge about $10-20 tops. With 3&3 behind a 6 cylinder, you wouldn't see any slippage as the power and RPM are to low to get any speed.------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/IHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver MCA member# 53321 NHRA and IHRA SS/LA National Record Holder '00, '01, & '02 Fleet of FoMoCo products including 88 ASC McLaren Mustang #28 Professional Manwhore The Barry of BarrysGrrl Quote #1: "I never met a magazine mechanic I liked." I think the 68 shop manual say 4X4 for an 8 and 3X3 for a 6 but if rebuilding they recommend 4X4 for the 6cyl. I think the C4 behind the J-code might have had a different servo also. I?ll have to check this out when I get home!
