Since the previous post I made has gotten fairly lengthly, and somewhat off topic, I though I would start a new thread and ask a couple more questions. Thanks to everyone's input on the earlier post. Sounds like there is still a lot of uncertainty on the 71-73 cars. New questions... On the Mach I which has the black detail on the rocker panels, are the front and rear valance panels also black, or are they body color. Seems to me that they would be black, but I don't know, and it seems that none of the pictures that I have seen show those areas. The pictures I have seen show that the black on the hood is a semi-gloss, not as shiny as the body color paint. Is the rocker panel treatment the same semi-gloss finish? Thanks!

cisco; my 71 mach has the argent details, but the scheme is the same between the two. The lower body from body line down is argent / black. The front and rear valances are completely argent/black. On my front valance, there was only overspray over the factory primer on the back side. The rear was the same way. I don't think that they were painted on the car, rather on a seperate line and attached after the main color was applied. What I found interesting was that the lower body color was applied first, and then the main body color. There was a ton of silver overspray in the rear wheel wells, and pn the frame rails. Here's a couple shots of the car on the trip home. My buddy Will (pictured) and I stopped at a car wash to blow off the crap that had accumulated while it sat. You can get a good look at the paint job here.

Yes, the front and rear valences should definately be painted either black or argent on a 71 or 72 Mach/BOSS. The 73 Machs did not have a tu-tone paint job, so there is only one color of paint on those, excluding the optional Ram-Air tu-tone which will be the same color as the Mach 1 stripe. It definately makes sense that the argent areas would be painted first on the blue w/argent machs. It has always been fords practice to paint the light colored areas ofa car first, and then apply the darker colors on top of that. My 76 'Starsky' Torinowas done in the same way. Not sure, but I suspect that if the car recieved black lower bodyside paint, then it was probably done after the body color. Not sure about thaty though.
