Well, a neighbor backed into my parked car today. Pics below pretty much say it all.Looks like all I need a door shell, weatherstrip, and probably the window regulator, and of course paint and associated labor to change over parts and rehang the door. The guy doesn't want to turn it into his insurance (GEICO), and is willing to pay me for the amount of an estimate. Anybody know rough numbers off the top of their heads? I happen to have a mint door shell in the shed, not sure how to name a fair market price for it though, as my dad gave it to me and he bought it about 25 years ago. Dad says its worth $400. They aren't reproducing 68 doors yet, so there's no standard prices to compare to.

NO!!!! That sucks Sig. At least the fellow is willing to take care of the repairs out of his pocket. But your poor defenseless mustang didn't need to get hit. As far as a fair price for repairs goes, I'm no help to you. Just sad that your stang got hit. I think your dad is right on with the value of the door. I bet you're looking at a $1000 job, including the price of the door. I bet that will be real hard to blend in. You're lucky that it just looks like he only got the door. Strike that, if you were lucky he wouldn't have hit your car.Be careful of the 'let not report this' deal. You can get screwed real easy. Give his 24 hours to give you the money or something and get this in writing ASAP! ------------------ '70 Mustang Mach 1 - '72 Mustang Sprint - '94 F-150 Be sure to remember our sponsors, Mustangs Plus, NPD, and Osborn Reproductions.

I agree with Steve you need to get that on paper. I am sure your neighbor is a nice guy but, i am also sure he has no idea just how much this is going to cost. I sent your picture to a good friend who is an body shop est. His first words were not very nice about your neighbor the second was that they did a job just like this on a 68 fast back. A clean door shell cost them $500.00 and the rest was $1,100.00 = $1600.00 !!!! with a body shop labor rate of 40.00 per hour. The paint was high dollar to match an old factory color... You got real lucky, they also had to replace the factory tint glass on a fast back. the glass was way up there too. Any way the est was $1600.00 down here with the price of the(rust free) door shell. I am sorry to see that hapen to you stang. I hope this helps. Rene

Well, my opinion will differ here. But if he doesnt want it turned in to his insurance company, then that is exactly what I would do. I mean, good gawd, he backed into a parked car! And a classic car that isnt something that is easy to miss. He had to know it was there. I would call and report it first thing in the morning. I would be way to leary of him offering to pay for it now, but as soon as he finds out how much it will cost, he may renig on the deal and you will be left with the whole expense. And at that point, you wont be able to report it because some goofy time limit will have passed and then you will be really stuck. Sorry, I dont trust people like that at all. And deals like that, generally, you try and play nice, you end up getting screwed and the "bad" guy gets the better end of the deal. Regardless, I wouldnt tell the guy you have a door.

Man, I bet you were sick! As was your neighbor. Did it mess up anything inside the door? I bet your neighbor has no idea of the cost. I'd let him know asap of the price. Give him an idea of what to expect & see how he reacts. If he takes the price ok then you should be ok. But if he gets upset you might be in for trouble. Like I said, I bet he's thinking under 1k. But I don't think that price is gonna happen. Also, don't let him take the car to a "friend" that does bodywork in their backyard shop. Unless you know the guy & his work. Good Luck!

Well, to put his intent to rest, I'm in base housing and the neighbor is another Marine. We did have the police come and file a report right away, and he was issued a citation. The Marine who filed the report is a witness to his statement that he would cover the damage, and if he backs out, I have his insurance information on file. Thanks for the info on the prices, I don't feel bad anymore about charging $400 for the door. And I did keep to myself that I had a spare.

Check Ebay and see what a mint condition OEM door is going for at the end of the bidding. My son hit a Honda a couple of weeks ago and just left a black scrape down the side with a very small dent and that cost him $1200 to have fixed. I think your dent is at least the $1600 and maybe more.Run it by a body shop and let them give you an estimate on the job, tell them what you want for your spare door and have them add it to the estimate. You may be surprized at the cost a shop is going to charge. ------------------ Ronnie 69 mach1 351W-4V engineless at the time! 70 Torino GT 351C-4v with a "shaker" Mustangs and More Member #23

We have 'Provincial' (state) insurance here, and the encourage people to pay for these things themselves. What they DO require is to file a report to them so if the payee renegs the insurance pays the bill and the payee pays higher insurance. My guess is $2000.00 for that repair. Dave
