In a continuing effort to get as much rubber under the fenders on the rear of my 67Fastback.... How close can one safely run their tire/rim package to the leaf springs? Obviously it's not the rim that is the concern.. but rather the flex of a tire side wall under load. I currently have a 17x8 Torque Thrust II on the back with a 245-45 tire. I believ I have a solid 1.25" between rubber and leaf spring. I'm curious as whether I can get the 17x9.5 rim in their. The 8" has a backspace of 4.75. Not sure on the 9.5. But let's assume that it is 1/2 the distance of the difference in rim width, 5.5". With a 275-40 tire measuring at 10.9" wide on that 9.5 rim, I believe I'd have somewhere between .5 and .75 inches of clearance between the tire and springs. Is this safe? Does the tire deflect more near the contact patch with the ground or does it deflect thru the entire radius of the tire under load? Anybody running this combo? I believe it'll fit with rolling the fender lips. Of course any tire outside the fender lip is frowned upon!!! What do you people think??
