Is the 351W crank any different than a 302? Are the rods and different? After 69 were the heads any different? A machine shop near my house says no, but I have my doubts.

Yes, the crank, the rods, and the heads are all different. I'd lose that machine shop in a heartbeat!

I agree with Steve loose that shop...
Here are the #'s
block;a 351 has 0.275 in higher deck
piston's are 0.136 higher
rods; 302 rod is 5.090 in length, 351 is 5.956 in length
Crank; stroke on a 302 is 3.00
stroke on a 351 is 3.50
main 302 2.2486-351 3.0000
rod 302 2.1232 351 2.3110
heads after 74 are all equiped with air inj ports in the exhaust and after 78 they had non adjustable rockers.
as you can see not much will inter change.
but for more data pick up a copy of ( HOW TO REBUILD YOUR SMALL BLOCK FORD) it will have all the #'s you could want.

Could a 351 crank and rods be used to make a mild stroked 302 or is it not worth it? As for that shop, I only use them for basics. Reason I ask about this is I got a 351W minus heads with an extra crank and rods w/ pistons (Thanks Alton ) and a spare 302 block. If the stuff could be made to work together I could (a) build a new engine for the 69 or (b)sell the parts to my uncle for a T-bird he is building.

Thanks,
Dustin

Now, the 351W has larger main bearing journals, for one thing.

But, couldn't those be machined down to fit a 302?

They had non-adjustable rockers in 69. So, some came with a adjustable set-up?

It would a lot easer to just get a stroker crank kit from Summit.
your front and rear seals will not work with the main caps and if i remember right the balence will be all wrong. the only parts you can swap with a little work are the heads.

You'd be whittling down 3.000" journals to 2.248" Not worth it.

If I were you I'd sell or stash the 302 block, build the 351W, sell the 351W heads and buy aftermarket heads.

Hey your out of Austin.... I have some real good books you can use ... 78 and up have the pedestal type rockers and 74 have the positive stop. which you could use the older fulcrum balls and make them adjustable.

Steve, wish I could afford a set of aftermarket heads, but I can't. Everything is on a budget. The Mustang, Cuda, Swinger, F-100, Dart GT and down the road a 2nd 56 F-100 (Big block truck) and a 39 Ford 2 dr. coupe street rod. The 351 is getting built up as a back up for the 56 F-100. Just a few projects. Heck, I had to talk my wife out of a 63 Comet 4 door this weekend. It was nice, but I have to much as it is and little experiance.

Rene, yup good ole Austin. I live north, but work south. I may have to take you up on your offer. What color is your Mach 1?
