After almost a year of hunting, I've decided the shroud I'm looking for cannot be had for love or money. It's a C8ZE-8146-B for a 68 302 with 24-inch radiator and AC, also used on 68 and 69 Cobra Jets. I've been told by various sources that all sorts of other shrouds will work, but what would be the best? I can get a C8ZE-8146-C (a guy on e-bay has a bunch of them) or my local store has the whole range of C9 shrouds. Any tips appreciated! Thanks, Simon

Actually, let me rephrase that. When I ask which shroud will be the best, I don't mean closest to original. I mean which will fit the best AND shift the most air, while coming from a Stang of the time. I've heard a rumour that a 69 shroud was actually the Ford service replacement part for C8ZE-8146-B, and M&Mer Ed put the idea into my head that there might have been a design defect in the 68 shroud, in which case I wouldn't want anyway. Can anyone confirm this?

Have had three 68 Mustangs with this shroud. Lot of V-8 AC cars sold here. Not aware of any design defect. Never saw a broken one. I have one on my 68 cv.

I think it was me that had this thought but it was only a thought. I really think it was one of those consolidation things. Why make two parts that can cover the same application? For example the metal heat riser tube for the 68 390 cars has a service replacement that was for the 428CJ. The only difference in that part I can see is that it fits into the hole in the bottom of the snorkel where the 428 fits around the outside of the flange on the snorkel hole. I was thinking that it would also depend on the water pump you are using! If you have the earlier I think you need to use the 69 but if you have the 70 and later you can use the 68-70 BB or the 70 shroud. This is due to the side of the engine the lower hose attaches to.

I'm confused there Ed. I've got the original '68 engine, and adapted the Ford (but not Mustang) radiator that came with it so I have the lower rad hose on the passenger side. This, I'm certain, is correct for my car. And the shroud number for the '68 and '69 Cobra Jet (i.e., big block) is the same as for my car. But you seem to be saying that the lower rad hose switched sides in '70, allowing people to use 68 BB shrouds. Have I completely misunderstood?

Sorry to bring this back from the depths but I have a few questions. First to answer that question! In 1970 the water pump changed sides for the radiator hose on small block cars. You did find one of these shrouds for a 68 302 AC car with a 24? radiator, right? What number was molded on the shroud and what sides would the upper and lower radiator hoses go on the radiator that the shroud fits? I might have found one! ------------------ Ed S.

I thought I was seeing things This thread takes me back! Yup, me and my shroud have been together about nine months now. The number on it is C8ZE-8146-B. Both radiator hoses are on the passenger side. The radiator is also original now - came out of a 68 Cougar. My obsession with these shrouds continues - so have you snagged one???

If it's not broken, grab it! Really. You might wait years, like I did, for another chance.

Unlikely Sam. I'm pretty sure it only came on 68 Stangs and Cougars with 289s / 302s and AC, and on 68-69 CJs (incl. Torinos). Do you have the magic C8ZE-8146-B stamped on it?[This message has been edited by Fastback68 (edited 05-05-2004).]
