I read once that a special 390 head had to be used in the '67/'68 Mustang. I decided to swap out my 302 for a 390. Is there a difference in which 390 heads I can use? If so, which heads should I be looking for?

What you are looking for are the heads with the exhaust ports cast for extra bolt holes other than the two vertical holes top and bottom. The CJ heads have 4 holes per port(2 per side as well)Other heads are cast for the holes but the holes aren't drilled.390 GT heads have 14 of the 16 holes but the bottom two of the inner ports aren't drilled. These heads are meant to fit cars with shock towers.I believe they first came in the 66 GT 390 fairlane but any 67 and up mustang and cougar will have these heads. As long as the heads are cast for the holes you can have them drilled,if they weren't from the factory.

you either need C8AE-H heads or others from 390 Mustang or Fairlane. The H heads either have 14 exhaust bolts or have the extra metal needed to dril the extra holes. Other than that, there is no difference.
