Ok, here's the plan..... I have a 289 engine and I'm wanting to use the water pump, power steering pump, altenator, and ac unit from an 85 5.0 liter engine on mine along with the serpentine belt and pulleys. First off, can I do this or is it a NO-NO? Secondly, if I can do this, do I need a radiator that has it's ports on the opposite corners of what the original 68 Mustang radiator had? Third, how many cores should I have in the radiator if I purchase an after market radiator for this application?

Your 289 will have a 3 bolt pulley on the bottom and the newer setup will have a 4 bolt. They changed to a 4 bolt pulley in 69 and they changed the water pump outlet to the other side so yes you will have to get the rad changed as well.If you change to the drivers side outlet waterpump you won't be able to see your timing marks on the pulley. You could use a 69 or newer 28oz 4 bolt balancer and maybe fabricate a timing marker on the other side to go with the balancer.I believe the pulley has to be spaced out a little bit for proper alignment as well.I think big D has this done on his car maybe he'll share some info.Whatever you do don't use the 1985 balancer as it has the 50 oz balance that will not work on your 289.[This message has been edited by mustangboy (edited 11-20-2002).]

I obviously forgot to add some other information to my post. Yes you brought up some very good points.I've got a Vibratech 28.2 in oz balance damper (with 4 bolt pattern) and am using the 50 in oz flywheel off that same 5.0 liter engine that has been balanced down to 28.2 in oz as well. So the entire rotating assembly is now in balance. It may seem odd that I did that, however; it was only $60 additional cost and now I can use a newer starter (different tooth count) for my application. Also while I was taking goodies from the 5.0 I managed to snag the timing pointer that mounts on the bottom left hand side of the timing chain cover and it seems to point to TCD when #1 is up. I'll prefit everything and make sure all the pulleys line up correctly. So what I'll wind up with is a 68 289 with an 85 starter, timing pointer, serpentine belt, alternator, ac compressor, power steering pump and water pump, odd ball flywheel and radiator, 69 damper. I may just throw the clutch fan away and go with an electric fan as well.

Well that changes everything Sounds like an easy swap,I think the serpentine setup looks cool and is also much better than the v-belts.Good luck with it.------------------ 1968 mustang j-code sprint.13.69@101 306cu.in, stock ported heads, weiand exellerator,650 holley DP,hedman hedders, comp 292 Magnum cam,4-speed,8 inch 4.11 detroit locker
