I need some suggestions on an exhaust system. I am restoring my 65 GT Fastback. I want to keep the original manifolds on the 289 4V. I like the way the original exhaust sounded, but I would consider something with a little more flow. Virginia Mustang offers a 2 1/4" system they say fits just like the original. Now I understand there is a Flowmaster system that fits, but I don't want it to be too loud. Anybody had experience with these? Please help me make a decision.

TIM , First of all I would like to welcome you to M&M , the best mustang site on the net. You won,t find better. I have a 65 fastback 289 4V , just had a custom exhaust put on a little while back , using my stock exhaust manifolds. Went with 2.5" front to back , with terminator mufflers , low throaty rumblly (spelling?) pitch to them. I personally do not like the sound of flowmasters. Seems everybody and their grandmothers have them , all the cars sound the same. Even by bringing the exhaust system over the rear axle it did not really hurt the flow at all , especially for a street car. I have sent you an email with photos of my exhaust syatem. Hope this helps you out. You will get more responses from others on this site , that have more knowledge than I do. All I know is my system works and sounds great. JOHN Forgot to mention I also went with the H-pipe. John, thanks for the info and the photos. There sure is a lot of info on this site. Pretty Cool! From the sound of things, you rrrreally don't like Flowmasters. That's ok. I like them, but you are right - everybody's got them. Anyway I'm afraid they would be too loud for my taste. I just want a system that looks pretty much original but doesn't hurt the performance.

THe Va Mustang system uses Delta Flows which are not supposed to be as loud as the original 2 chamber ones.
