I ran into a car for sale at a swap meet this weekend that the guy swore was a factory GT. COuld it be?? It was an "A"code 65 with the original 289 4V motor. He said it was an all original unrestored car( That it looked like). He said it was a GT.It had several GT items, but those could of been added anytime even the bigger front sway stabilizer bar. But it was a 3 speed manual. Non woodsteering wheel, standard interior. Did a GT ever come frommthe factory with a 3 speed. I doubted it. I know dealer installed GT's are out there .That's what I told him he had .He dissagreed. Who is correct?

3 speed was standard on all 289 Mustangs except 289 HP. The 4 speed was an extra cost option even in a GT. Most dealers ordered all GT's for stock with 4-speeds or autos. Only a real cheapskate would have ordered a standard 3 speed. ------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator/ non 65-66 Mustang owner sensitivity co-ordinator NHRA/IHRA/SRA/MCA member NHRA and IHRA SS/LA National Record Holder '00, '01, & '02 Fleet of FoMoCo products including 88 ASC McLaren Mustang #28 Part time secret agent license #0089 Professional Manwhore The Barry of BarrysGrrl Quote #1: "I never met a magazine mechanic I liked." I don,t think that they ever did the GT in a 3 spd standard , but , I could very well be wrong. Get the door tag numbers and codes , as well as , the vin number , then decode them. Also check the inner 1/4 panel for a matching number to the vin. Yhis is not a GT option , I believe all the stangs had this , it is just a way to see if they have been changed. I see that now Alex , it was not there when I started my response to this post. I have learned something new again , always thought that the 4 spd was standard equipment on the GT. Just more info I now have stored in my mustang section of my brain JOHN ------------------ 65 2+2 FASTBACK 68 COUPE 87 TAURUS WAGON 98 F150 XLT TRITON V8 4.6, 4 WHEEL DRIVE Member:Vancouver Island Mustang Association M&M #1710 MyPhotoPage MY TRUCK

I ordered a new 65 GT Fastback (in 65 of course) and had to pay extra for the optional 4 spd. The car had the standard steering wheel and interior. The only other option was the AM radio.------------------ Bernie Frank 66 Fastback restomod project 85 GT (preserved) 82 GT (original)

Just to let you know ALL the numbers did match. But even decoding the door tag or VIN number data will not tell you if it is a GT or not. By the way the car did sell Sunday ,not to me, I was more curious than interested.. It was very very rusty . He was asking $3900 for it. That surprises me too ,a 3 speed GT A code... I don't supposed it was even syncronized down into first gear. Boring.... I'll stick to my "K" code ""4-SPEED ""Convert.

Shoe, I agree with Alex, 3-speed tranny was standard equipment. there are a couple of other items that can tell the real from fakes. If it was a 65, it had to have a date code later than Feb 65, P through V. Look at the rear frame rails on the inside just in front of the rear shackles, there must be threaded inserts in the frame, both left and right sides for the factory dual exhaust hangers, also inserts on the rear floor pans on both sides for muffler hangers. The rear brake hose mounting on the rear axle must be in front of the axle not on top. Standard A and C codes were on top. These are the most common things that people who make fake GT's don't take the time to change.Mike

Mike is 100% correct. Those are ALWAYS the first things that I look at when confirming a 65-66 GT. Back up lights were optional too. $3900 doesn't sound bad to me for a complete running car. ------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator/ non 65-66 Mustang owner sensitivity co-ordinator NHRA/IHRA/SRA/MCA member NHRA and IHRA SS/LA National Record Holder '00, '01, & '02 Fleet of FoMoCo products including 88 ASC McLaren Mustang #28 Part time secret agent license #0089 Professional Manwhore The Barry of BarrysGrrl Quote #1: "I never met a magazine mechanic I liked."
