Howdy! Have 428 cu. pi. on heavy throttle I can hear a what I think is a spark knock. took the vac. hose off & cannot hear it, I'm thinking it could be the springs in the dist. maybe??--- If I drove it this way for a while would it hurt anything? The car runs great like it is now, but concerned about the future if I continue to run it this way. Any help would be appre. Thanks---Frank.

Sounds like you may have too much total timing (mechanical and vacuum)Your springs only control the mechanical advance.I would try retarding your initial setting a few degrees and retry it with the vacuum hooked up.You won't hurt anything except maybe your gas mileage by not running the vacuum advance so don't worry about that.If all else fails you might want to purchase an adjustable vacuum advance and you can custom tailor it to your needs. Also make sure your feeding that 428 lots of good quality high octane fuel as a lean condition will also cause pinging.
