During lunch, I drove by the house where the 69 Mustang I have been keeping an eye is parked and it's on jack-stands with the front wheels removed. I've got to find out what this guys up to. I've been trying to wait him out on pricing. Looks like he may have called my bluff!!!

Well, I talked to the guy and it seems he has passed it on to his son. He said the son may be interested in selling it so he's going to talk to him and I'm going to get with them tomorrow afternoon. He's planning on paying someone to get the engine ready to fire up since it's been sitting for 10 years. I figure I can save him some money by taking it off of his hands. Wish me luck!

Well, here's the latest. Called the guy back last night. His son was at school taking some kind of test before he starts Monday. Hearing this, I assumed that he was a college kid because my children have already started. Come to find out, his son goes to a private school and is only 15. My first thought was, "oh, no. He'll never let this car go. I know I wouldn't." So, I mention this to his dad and he says that his son doesn't really have that much interest in the Mustang, to him it's just another car. HOLY MOLY!!! I was speachless. The dad seems to think that his son is fooling with the Mustang simply because its there. He's not sure, but he thinks there's a good chance he'll sell. I'm suppose to call him back this evening. Keep wishing me luck because my wife is going to kill me if he doesn't sell it to me.

Does Dad really expect you to negotiate price with a 15-year-old kid??? And what's he doing "giving" it to a 15-year-old anyway? No one should be allowed behind a wheel before they're at least 18, but I know not all my American friends agree with me

From what I understand, dad gave the Mustang to son and dad isn't going to sell it out from under him. I'm sure dad will have much input on price negotiations. I've got 4 grand to work with. That's how much dad said he'd take for it when I first found it 2 years ago. That was before I discovered it had been sitting for 10 years and hadn't been started. From what I can tell, he's washed it and taken the front tires off but left the drums on. I'm sure the brakes are shot so I'm gonna start at 3 and work from there. NADA says that in driving condition its worth 3875.

Dave, Take a copy of the NADA or Kelly Blue Book print out with you. This will give you a little more leverage in when haggeling on a price. Point out that the mustang has run in ten years and a few other minor things. Try to point out the problems in a nice manner. No sense pissing them off. Good luck and bring that fastback home.We may have a lead on another '69 fastback here in P-cola if things don't work out for you. I'll be taking the NADA report as well as one from VMR International (www.vmrintl.com). It has a really good condition breakdown in which all of them state that the vehicle should run and be streetable. One thing that's going to help is that they were going to pay someone to get it running which will cost him big bucks because most anyone I know will recommend a rebuild which should translate to $$$$$.....

Talked to the kids dad this evening. He says his son has been out on ebay pricing Mustangs and thinks that the one he has that's been sitting for 12 years with an engine that in all probability needs to be rebuilt, tires that are dry-rotted, holes cut in the shock towers, brakes that are going to have to be completely overhauled, upholestery that you can hear the fabric tearing when you sit down, shrunken weatherstipping, peeling paint and 33 year old suspension is worth $6000. I told his dad that it was worth maybe $3500 but since he had been cleaning it up and doing whatever to it, I'd go a max of $4000. The dad seemed to agree with me (that could be wishful thinking) and said he'd get back with me in a few days. I gave him the NADA and VMR websites for reference. The bad thing is, for them to make it a $6000 Mustang, they're going to have to spend more than the $2000 difference in what I'm willing to give them to get it there. Not to mention that I'm going to be in the hole already giving them 4 g's for it. Oh well, I'll let you know as soon as I know.
