Has anyone ever performed this modification?
Is it worth the trouble?
Also is it possible to weld up a groove in the pedal shaft and machine it back down smooth?

Have heard of it, haven't done it or seen it. Sounds like a great idea, though

Yes, you can repair your pedal shaft by welding it up and machining it back down. Take your time with the grinder, don't go too far or you'll need to start over. I repaired my z-bar this way... beaded it up, ground it close, filed it finished. Turned out awesome

Exactly.
Has anyone used this or similar modification with any success? Cobra Automotive also offers a similar much more expensive modification.
