I run a Mallory unilite, with the required ballast resistor....I just upgraded my entry level MSD Blaster box and coil to a Crane Hi 6 and LX 92 coil. My mechanic who did the work, removed the ballast resistor and said it was not needed with the New box.... Now I read here...that without the Ballast Resistor the Unilite will blow it's pickup module.... Any input here...Please....thanks------------------ EDDIE D Resto Mod '70 Sport Roof Arrest Me Red '02 GT, Torch Red "If I knew I would have lived this long, I would have taken better care of myself !" Not to cop out, Eddie, but I'd check with Mallory's tech department. ------------------

You do not need it Eddie. Your mechanic is correct. The ballast is a step down and will reduce voltage. Electronic ignition needs a minimum of 12 volts to perform at optimum or peak. Most will run at 6 volts or less, but will not perform over 5500 RPM. Mallory wants their stuff to last foever and by reducing voltage it keeps the module cool, but hinders top end performance. I must have 50 ballast resistor from Unilites that I have installed over the years. Eddie, I agree with Mr.Denysenko, The Unilite will function at 12 v input. Even if you used a Mallory Box they would require that you pitch the resistor wire. My old Hyfire IV box did not use a resistor and the new Hyfire VI AL doesn't either. One thing that is critical is make sure the 12 volt input to the Crane Hy6 or any box is a good, clean 12v, preferrably a direct connect to a battery source. Ignition boxes don't like reduced voltages. Mike

I have mallowry's recommended diagram with and without ignition boxes. Without the boxe, a ballast resistor is installed With a Hyfire or MSD (they have both drawings) the resistor has been removed

Mallowry's quote next to their drawing :"Installing an ignition ballast resistor has no effect on the performance of the ignition system (with ignition Box). However, installing or retaining the original ballast resistor allows for easy conversion back to standard ignition" I just like to give complete information !

I have a direct, unmolested 12 volt source to the BOX..... This mechanic is the only guy I trust to give my car to...and it seems as usual he was right...thanks Again...
