I was doing some routing maintenance on the car today, pulling the rear drums to look at the brakes, and found my drivers side is spilling gear oil like it has an open faucet. I put in new seals and bearings about 3-4 years ago when I upgraded the brakes to 10 x 2.5, so the axles haven't been out since then.

Anyhow, I'm trying to pull that axle to put a new seal in, and I just can't get the bugger out. I know Steve has posted some tips on that before, and I remember having a hard time getting that one out last time, but I don't recall the tips and its being a real pain in the a$$.

So far I've tried hammering a 5/16 rod through the backing plate bolt holes against the axle and also putting the drum on backwards and 1, having it tight and beating on it with a hammer and 2, having it loose and using it as a slide hammer, but nothing is budging the axle yet.

Ok, I got mad and really hit it with the drum on backwards tight and it popped right out. But, then I saw my 3 year old Pep Boys wheel bearing was coming apart. @#$%^. What's the point in preventative maintenance (well, I got it apart so might as well change the bearings) if its only going to last 3 years.

So, I call Advance and they don't have the bearing. Autozone doesn't have it either. We're talking your standard 8 inch rear end, must be 5 million of them on the road still, and two big carriers don't have them. Its the Timken RW707 if anybody knows who has them let me know. We also have a Carquest and Napa in town, both closed on Sunday though.

Fortunately, the axles in the car are the spare set, still have the originals out in the shed, so I have something to use until I can find a new bearing.

I would try Napa! They are pretty good in my area. If they don?t have it in stock they could have it by the afternoon or the next day.

I'll second the Napa idea. There's a little 'mom & pop' parts house locally that has everything I've ever asked for, so I'm spoiled . It's a bit of a drive, though. When in a hurry, Napa is closer, and in many cases has come through

Are there any burrs on the bearing race seat in the housing? That really bites that they were that stubborn to come out, enough to come apart
