A friend of mine stored my car in his garage in Austin for nearly 6 months while I was finding a new place in Mississippi. During this time I told him to start it up every now and then and drive it to the store or whatever, I totally trust the guy. During that entire time he put a little less than 300 miles on the car.Anyway, at some point he decieded to check the oil, which is a good thing, the bad thing is he put the dipstick back in backwards, so it curved away from the side of the pan. It must have hit the crank as the entire end is gone. Two questions, one, should I drop the pan or try to fish the offending part out with using a magnet? Anybody know where I can get a replacement dipstick for a 390gt motor? ------------------ Jay Kilroy 68' Fastback GT 390 "No such thing as a cam thats too big"

Pull the pan , find the missing chunk of your dipstick. It does not belong where it is. Also a good excuse to take a peek at the bottom end , and , change you oil. It IS possible to put a dipstick in the wrong way, but I'd think you'd have to apply the strength of Hercules to snap it just by pushing down. Let us know if you actually find the missing half. Maybe one of your friend's kids took it out, snapped it in two, then stuck it back in the hole.

I wish, the buddy has no kids. This all probably comes from the one time I took my car to a "quick change" joint. (I was living in an apartment and they frowned on buckets of oil and jack stands)The dumbass working my stall got my dipstick confused with one from a V6 Chevy Blazer. Anyway, when I got my stick back it had been beat up pretty bad inside that V6. ------------------ Jay Kilroy 68' Fastback GT 390 "No such thing as a cam thats too big"

If you?re looking for a NOS chrome one for a good price, good luck! They went through the roof! You can find a painted type around from most suppliers for not that much

The one I have sure isn't chrome, and I would be perfectly happy with good old Ford blue. Which "suppliers" are you talking about because I am not having any luck.------------------ Jay Kilroy 68' Fastback GT 390 "No such thing as a cam thats too big"

Jay, My 390 in my tow truck ate the ends off of TWO dipsticks without getting any "heartburn"....they were snapped off right at the top line, about 5 inches up from the bottom of the stick. I just kept putting a new dipstick in there. Sometimes the recieving tube can be installed less than straight and will cause the dipstick to get caught up with the crank. I found both ends laying in the bottom of the oil pan a few years later when I went thru the motor (it was burning & leaking oil; nothing to do with the dipsticks being chewed off). If it was mine - I wouldn't worry about it. I'd just put another one in the hole...... Ryan
