I found a nice '70 Mach for sale but the vehicle certification label is missing or painted over. Is there another way to determine if it is the original color and 4-speed. The rear end has been swapped for a 3.91 ratio. Makes me wonder if other things are not original. Would these things being changed reduce the value? Is it possible to get another label? Thanks in advance.

It would be possible that the car may have a body buck tag on the radiator support, on the passenger side front. That would be the case if the car is built in Dearborn, look for a F in the 2nd place of the VIN. The body buck tag would have that info, but you'll have to post it so it could be decoded. If you are looking for the color, check in the trunk, or any place that normally doesn't get painted over in a repaint. Do you want to know if it is the original 4 spd, or if it originally had a 4spd? If you want to see if the 4 spd is the original then you'll need to get under the car and look for any tags on the tranny. Then those will help w/ the date codes and see if it's possible for the trans to be orig. Color change would probably have very little affect on the car's value, unless it's going concours, same with the trans I would think. You can get new labels from Kevin Marti at Marti Autoworks www.martiauto.com Sorry for the long reply ------------------ 1970 Deluxe SportsRoof (63B),(2)46 Ford trucks, 47 Ford truck, 57 Ford Fairlane 500 4dr, '72 Olds Vista Cruiser(for sale), '88 Bronco II(for sale)...running out of room, selling some of my projects [This message has been edited by 70SportsRoof (edited 05-02-2002).]

70SportsRoof:Thanks for the long reply! I enjoy detailed responses. Unfortunately the car was built in Metuchen so I guess no body tag to help out. I wanted to know if the car was originally a 4-speed car. I would guess that there are probably many ways to tell. If changing the color and transmission doesn't effect the value; is it safe to say that no warranty plate wouldn't matter much either? Thanks for the webe site.

Metuchen cars had a plates that was located on the apron just forward of the hood hinge. They were held on with one flat screw. Many are missing. Marti Auto Works can provide a printout on your car, giving the color and equip, build date, and the DSO that it went to. Concerning color change, If it is done cprofessionally (painting everything that had the original color, removing parts, etc, it shouldn't affect it. I don't know if Marti will provide a data sticker with the changed color. It's your car. If you want to change color, it is suggested using another correct color for that year.
