I guess a million people have done this before. Here's the story ... I'm about to mount my new mufflers and thought I'd do it close to right. My 302 originally had a single exhaust (passenger side), and the rear of the muffler was attached via a hanger to two holes just behind where the rear shock enters the floor pan. When I bought the car, the driver side muffler was attached to the bolt for the rear seatbelt. Not a bad fix -- it worked. But I thought I would fabricate a hanger for the driver side that matched the passenger side -- the same as on 428 CJ's. The holes are there on the driver side, but they're way too big. When I removed the original mount on the passenger side I found that the holes in the floor pan were also oversized but that a plate with the correct thread had been welded on the back to accept the hanger. There doesn't seem to be any way I can weld a similar plate on the driver side withough cutting the car open. What to do??? Thanks, Simon

They make a tool for this, it looks like a pop rivet gun but has a threaded rivet called a nutsert, check with a body shop, they use them pretty often.

Thanks! And look, someone's even written up a page on how to install nutserts without the special tool ... http://happytogether.com/318ti/notebook/nutserts/
