I thought I would tune my old 302 a little better since it will be a few months until I get my 351W finished, and Roger may be using it after that. The problem is it is running really rich, the exhaust pipes always black, plugs black. The motor is a very worn out 302 from a '74 Granada with a cast 4V intake and a Holley/Motorcraft carb I rebuilt that looks about 550-600cfm. The primary jet size I think is 61. The jets have 61 and an upsidedown 2 after it stamp on. They do look a tad smaller than #64 jets, which are the smallest in my jet box. I was thinking about going 8-10 jets smaller to start with but if the jets are already #61 do I have another problem? Thanks, Dave

I doubt it's a jet problem, stock carbs are usually pretty lean. I'd check the float level and condition. As a matter of fact, I'd replace the float anyway as long as you are rebuilding it.------------------

I have already rebuilt the carb including a new needle assembly. The float is original and is adjusted so there is just a trickle of gas coming out of the plug hole at idle. I am still thinking the #61 jets are too large for the low compression, smog cammed, worn out motor. Anyone else? Dave

How old is the air filter? That's a 10" diamater choke butterfly if its loaded up (restrictive). You could try one step hotter spark plugs too

WOW, you guys dug up an old post! That motor is now in Roger's '85 T-Bird with full length headers and good exhaust. Roger said that the float is sunk so we have some more work to do; also I was going to richen the primary jets for him now. A week ago Roger blew a head gasket and while the heads were off I did a quick port job as it needed new valve seals anyway. Thanks anyways, Dave------------------ '70 ragtop Stang 351W - 13.70 @104.
