The car is a 69' sportsroof with the original 351W and FMX trans. Is a C4 swap just a simple exchange? Will my current trans cross member work, need to be exchanged, modified? Will the current driveshaft work, need shortened, extended? The C4 came out of a 73' Mustang and was bolted to a 351W. All indications are that this is a 74' engine and trans - it was not original to the car that it came from. Anyone done this swap before, care to leave some advice, lessons learned, etc? Thanks in advance!

Simple swap. Cross member, driveshaft, trans mount, shift rod can all be retained. You can use the same flex plate as long as you get a large bell housing C-4. 74 Mustangs did not come with V-8's so it is not likey that it is a Mustang trans if it is indeed a 74.

Thanks Alex. The PN starts with a D4 on the transmission, and I know it didn't originally come in the car I pulled it from. Since it is still mated to the 351W that it came with, it will have to be the correct bell housing............

Thanks again, I will likely have it rebuilt this spring instead of my FMX.

I had a 72 Gran Torino with a Cleveland, and I believe, an FMX. It was a troublesome trans. In 2 years of ownership, it was down twice. Thank God for warranty.

Nothing wrong with the trans, but it is the only item not rebuilt or replaced in the 6 years I have had the car. I plan on keeping it in storage, but the C4 is lighter and has more readily available parts - for rebuild and then some.

Yes, it is sluggish and overweight. One quick question - transmission fluid lines, do they need modified, replaced?

Thanks again!

The lines will be different as the taps are in different place. Not very hard to adapt.
