okay, i'm getting my steering box rebuilt and the guy who is doing it told me that it takes a special type of grease, and that axle grease won't cut it. Do any of you know what kind of lube this is and where I can get it? Thanks.dave

According to some references, the original grease has been superceeded with Ford grease # XG1-C. I recently purchased a tube of this at my local Ford dealer and used in the 66 Fastback's box.------------------ Bernie Frank 66 Fastback restomod project 85 GT (preserved) 82 GT (original)

85-140w gear oil works just fine. MM has it's original gear box and it has been changed twice. Works like new. ------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator/ non 65-66 Mustang owner sensitivity co-ordinator NHRA/IHRA/SRA member NHRA and IHRA SS/LA National Record Holder '00, '01, & '02 Fleet of FoMoCo products including 88 ASC McLaren Mustang #28 Part time secret agent license #0089 US Class Nationals link

I was told you can't use regular gear oil, it'll all leak out the bottom. I bought a box off of a junked stang that'd been sitting in a field for a few years and it was dry so I filed it with 85/90 I think it was, and it's dripping out the bottom. Perhaps a worn seal? Anyways the other one needed new bearingsa and I got a new oil seal too, so maybe that'd seal it. My cars been sitting for a week and a half now it's quite the bummer.dave

Make sure that you use 85-140w (very common)and replace the seal. The seal is what is leaking. Good luck and enjoy. ------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator/ non 65-66 Mustang owner sensitivity co-ordinator NHRA/IHRA/SRA member NHRA and IHRA SS/LA National Record Holder '00, '01, & '02 Fleet of FoMoCo products including 88 ASC McLaren Mustang #28 Part time secret agent license #0089 US Class Nationals link
