E-bay can be a good photo reference source! I just found these 67 "frame rail tie downs" -- and I also have ONE on my car. It says "Auction for one set of frame rail tie downs used on mustangs and cougars that were transported to their destination via rail car. These pieces were bolted to the rear of the car to chain them down during transport. The dealerships were to remove them upon arrival, but some went untouched. ... Complete your concours restoration with these nice pieces."
Do you think they belong on a concours car? I mean, are they really a PART of the car? I would have thought they belong in the same category as plastic wrapping on seats. Here's the link ...

I think it could be either way. My '66 has the original tie downs on it, my '70 doesn't. The way it went was that Ford would give you a credit to return them, it probably wasn't very much which would explain why some dealers left them. It depends on how you want your car. If you are making it like the day it rolled off the line, then they probably should be there, otherwise they could be left off. If you're entering concours resto class then check the rule books and see what they say.

There were two sizes of them. Both are for same application. I have a pair of the large and left a small size on a 66 GT cv when I sold it. They were natural metal and not black. Ford wasn't about to paint something like that. They are repo's at 44.95 per pair and a little over 50 for the large. Saw them in one of the catalogs.

They used them to tie the cars down on shipment to the dealers
