I was on my way to work yesterday morning in my '70 Mach I when I suddenly lost power and heard a loud "pop". After I coasted over to the shoulder the car wouldn't start. I thought maybe a belt had broke - nope, then I though maybe the timing chain snapped. I was already late for work so I had to have it towed to a local shop. The guy just called and said the MSD box went bad. That box is no more than 9 months old! Has anyone heard of this before?

All the MSD boxes I've personaly owned have never gone bad. The one in my wifes Civic has been going strong for 7 years now. I have used, peviously owned boxes that were 10 plus years old with no problems ever.? Did you get it wet? Is it in a spot it gets hot?

No to both. I wasn't far from home either, so the car was just warming up.

Harley,
This won't help you much, in the mid 70's when capacitive discharge-CD systems were just showing up on the market, I put one on my coupe, couldn't tell any difference, then one day I could not get it to start, after about a week of trouble shooting it turned out to be a dead short inside the box. Even with todays improvements in manufacturing anything is possible.

Send your box back to MSD, maybe they will be sympathetic and send you a new one.

Mike

Hmmm, wierd....wonder if it was realy the box or false diagnosis? I've just never heard of them going bad unless they were mistreated....water, vibration, heat or welding without disconecting the neg battery cable. Coils will just stop working like that. Or the resistor...dono?

MSD has the BEST customer service dept I have ever seen in the entire ignition industry. Only Accel was better when they were part of Echlin and that was many moons ago.

I had the same exact problem
except I found my distributor gear broken then my car would only run at no less than 30 degrees initial timing! and then it ran like s**t...
anyway I know it was the msd because I switched out the broke 6AL with a 6 i had in another car and everything is fine now just sent my box back to MSD for repair...
same big bang noise too, make sure your gear is alright
