Over the phone, I've been offered a "1967 Shelby GT fastback" and I want to sound knowledgable when I go see it. The guy gave me the VIN off the door -- 7R01 etc., or '67 coupe, so we can forget that. But he also gave me the VIN which he says is on the top of the inner fender -- 8T02J etc., or '68 fastback J code. My question: '68s never had a visible VIN on top of the inner fender, did they? I'm talking about in that cut-out in the outer fender. That stopped in '67 didn't it? I know this ain't no Shelby, but I'm still interested. The guy does know enough about Stangs to know when he's looking at a fastback. Thanks, Simon

Have seen them with the vin# there and some that aren't but would be a hidden # under fender. My 68 has a stamping in that area that is half hidden and it also has some hidden #'s. 8T02J would be correct starting#'s for a 68 Shelby GT 350 but it doesn't automatically mean that it is. On my 68 Shelby GT 350, I don't think{not sure, now} it had a stamping there but had hiddens elsewear. The Shelby plate would be there. If it is in the Shelby registry, that info would be available. My Shelby was brought up from Puerto Rico and was never there as long as I owned it. There are a number of ways to peg a real or unreal one. A visual inspection of car would be nec. It would have all the regular GT oddities plus Shelby things. If you have the complete vin, an email to Marti Auto Works will get the ball rolling to get fast verification for a VERY reasonable cost.

Mellow, maybe it IS real! I just assumed it wasn't 'cos I thought the code as only for a fastback J-code. I don't get to look at a lot of real Shelbies Also the price, $700, doesn't seem to be in Shelby territory. Ed, if it's a '67 fastback, we share it out. If it's a '68, it's all mine I'm wondering if this is the same Shelby clone you were telling me about. It's in Mandaluyong.

One little 'Fordism' re the 68 Shelby. Didn't it make good sense to have the Shelbys built in Metuchen and shipped to Detroit area, rather then get them off the line in Dearborn???? They were building 68's in Dearborn.

Well, this is all exciting stuff, because as you know, 8T02J is a Metuchen car! Please Lord, let it be a Shelby, then let me sell it and retire! I'm gonna see it tomorrow. Will keep you posted for sure.

Simon, the one I mentioned is from Cubao area not from Mandaluyong. Interested in a 61 T-Bird? No engine, no papers, full trimmings, intact interior, all for $600 Good Luck!!!

Oh joy Goodbye e-bay, hello my "new" '68 GT fastback with a 9-inch limited slip diff, Toploader (I think), perfect trap door ($450 recently on e-bay), tilt steering column ($250 and counting on e-bay), perfect interior, etc. The doors, hood and trunk lid are junk, and the engine and console have gone, but boy am I pleased
