Hi-I got a 1969 Mach 1 with a FMX transmission. Is it possible for me to convert to a 5 or 4 speed? IF so what parts do I need and how much will it all cost. Thanks in advance. ------------------ 1969 Mach 1 with a 351 Windsor, Holley Street Avenger(670cfm), Edelbrock 351W intake, mallory ignition, MSD blaster ignition coil, headers, flowmasters,

Hi Red, Welcome to Mustangsandmore.com. Glad to have you here with us. Enjoy all the Forums and be aware that this site is very addictive. Yes, you can instal either a four speed or five speed tranny. I do not know what all will be required for the conversion off the top of my head, but we have plenty of members that have done these conversions. I'm sure one of them will be along to help you out shortly. Again, welcome to the extended M&M family. The best way to do the swap, is if you can find a fairly complete doner car. That way everything is there, & you can take all the needed pieces out, & see how they fit into your car. Back in the mid 70`s, I had a 70 Fastback with a 351C 4v & FMX, I got all the pieces from a wreckers, but not too likely to find a complete stick Mustang there these days. For the clutch/brake pedal assembly, that can come out of any stick 69-70 Mustang regardless of engine.(other years MAY work, I`m not certain though)The cross shaft will need to be 302 or 351(WorC)The holes for the cross shafts frame mounted pivot bracket were already in place on my car, everything bolted right in. You could probably get everything from Perogie Enterprises, but it certainly won`t be cheap. An alternative to trying to scrounge up 30+ year old mechanical linkage, would be to go to a cable clutch system. I have a T5 in my 302 Fairmont, & I just love it. It has a low first gear, for strong accelaration, plus a nice overdriven 5th. Plus they are light, fairly cheap, & easy to find.------------------ 78 Fairmont 428 4 speed 10.20@130mph 80 Fairmont 302 5 speed 12.8@105mph 85 Mustang NHRA Stocker under construction, 302 5 speed
