I'm thinking of putty headers my 68 289.I got a set of of ebay and they are nice, except they won't fit. They are going to hit I think some clutch linkage. Are headers going to be worth doing? If I just put larger pipes on and freer flowing mufflers, won't that help? I am going to eventually put cam, intake, and carb. I thought this would be a good first step, but do the headers do that much? I hear different opinions and what ones fit? thanks guys.

Yes they are worth the problems. No need to add a Cam/Carb and intake then change over the dia. of the exh. pipes and the added cost of new Flowmasters if you going to bottle up the flow at the ehx manifolds. Are the headers you have now the correct ones for a 289..you should have no problems installing them...plenty of room in a 68/289/302 for headers. sam

I think the ones I got fit the 289 , but they are for a fox mustang. They come down wher the clutch stuff is. I think I'm going to get some try y's instead. What do you think?

Cam, intake and carb would be almost useless without headers, you'd be real disapointed. Exhaust manifolds do little more than connect the heads to the pipes. A good set of headers, larger (than stock) pipes and well designed mufflers are the other half of the intake equasion, one won't work to its full potential without the other. Do be cautioned- a free flowing exhaust system will lean out the combustion cycle in your motor due to its scavenging effiency. Keep an eye on those spark plugs... if they start looking real light tan to white in color, you'll need to jet your carb richer (or just go ahead and do the cam/intake/carb) before things start getting too hot.

If you have tri y's, you will have to make a dent in the area where it hits. This is a problem on 67/8. If you have power steering, you will need to buy a bracket that drops the ram for clearance. Also, the drop bracket should be beefed up. This has been on another post.
