I've been noticing lately that some '69-'70 Mustangs have the panel between the cowl panel and the firewall seam where the shock tower braces bolt painted two different ways.

Some have this area painted body color, some have it painted semigloss black.

Does anyone know if this is related to manufacturing plants or assembly dates?

Can I buy a MCA judging book that has this kind of detail?

I just found this on the MCA site:

MCA Official Early Model (64 ?-73) Judging Rule Book $9.00 Postpaid

Does anyone have this book? Does this have the detail I'm looking for?

I seem to remember that subject being in a letter to the editor in Mustang Monthly a couple of issues ago, maybe early-mid summer? Not positive, but it rings a bell.

I hate to admit it, but I don't remember the answer. I'll do some digging.

Best bet. Talk to an MCA Gold card judge. One of them is none other than Jim Osborn. Rick Schmidt has a 70 or 2 also. The judging manual does not specificlly mention it. I have seen black and also color. Check out pic in Bullitt issue of MMonthly 10-01 page 50-51 70 Mach I It is color and looks good!

Steve,

I have also looked at this on 69 and 70 model cars. I have seen pictures of concours BOSS 302 cars and 428 cars that all show this area to be black, which would seem correct since the black is painted with the cowl panel and fenders removed, why spend the time to mask off this area on the assembly line, it doen't show when the hood is closed.

At one time I had a MCA Judging Book and do not remember seeing this caled out in it.

I will follow this thread so when I paint my car it will be correct.
