The easiest way I use to tell if I am looking at a 302 or a 351W, is to look at the front of the block, between the top of the timing cover & the bottom of the intake manifold end seal area. On a 351W, there are 2 angled "ribs", one on either side of the distributor. On a 302, there are no ribs. Also the 351W has a wider intake manifold than a 302, but unless you can compare the 2 side by side, its kinda tough to compare. One other thing, if you remove the distributor, the hole in the shaft that the oil pump drive rod fits into is 1/4" on a 302, & is 5/16" on a 351W. You can check this with the appropriate size allen wrench.------------------ 78 Fairmont 428 4 speed 10.20@130mph 80 Fairmont 302 5 speed 12.8@105mph 85 Mustang NHRA Stocker under construction, 302 5 speed

If the intake is off mine says 351w right between the lifters and on the heads it is stamped 351w. Ron

Also, the 351 has about an inch of block between the cylinder deck and the flange for the water pump, while the 302 has they cylinder deck almost flush with the water pump flange.289/302: 351W:

Infoseeker, The easiest way that I know of is to check the firing order. The 302 firing order is 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8. The 351W firing order is 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-3. Hope this helps make things easy. Check that firing order as cast numbers on the intake manifold, and not by how the sparkplug wires are routed, a 302 cam can be put in a 351w and vise versa, making things really confusing.

If you remember the deck height/water pump outlet hole difference, it will only take you a glance to tell them apart.

Steve is right, you can tell in about .002 seconds by looking at the deck height, also firing order can be misleading, my 351 uses a 289 firing order (since I bought the cam first thinking that I would build a 289/302)------------------ 67 Fastback - Arctic White Pearl paint 351W ,Trick Flow Aluminum Heads, Edelbrock TorkerII, Carter 750 CFM, Comp. Also, all 5.0L HO 302`s from 82-95 used the 351 firing order.------------------ 78 Fairmont 428 4 speed 10.20@130mph 80 Fairmont 302 5 speed 12.8@105mph 85 Mustang NHRA Stocker under construction, 302 5 speed
