As some of you know, we have a '73 Mach 1 w/ 351C and a 4-speed, which is a T-10. I need to replace the clutch and rebuild the tranny (leaks and grinds thru the gears). My question is, what needs to be done to change the trans over to a top loader and what parts need to be replaced (crossmember, drive shaft, etc) to accomplish this. Also, if I pick up a used top loader in good condition what should I look for before buying it.
Any and all help (or advice) is appreciated.

first shopping for a top loader, look for a small block trans. the input shaft is slightly longer i dont remember how much off hand. second remove the top cover and check the gears for damage, and the shift forks for bending. check the smoothness of the shifting and for any roughness in gear when turning the input shaft. as for swaping it, it should bolt in place of the T-10. you might have to change the output yoke.

Somebody had one for sale and I posted this, but I bought a freshly rebuilt sb toploader with a brand new Hurst shifter complete for $750. The shifter alone was about 200 or $250.

Your shifter from the T-10 is the same as for the toploader and will swap out no problem, so I'd say $500 for a GOOD bare toploader.

Damn I am gitting old but how did you git a T-10 in a71Stang Ithought all 4/speeds after65 were toploaders? My 63 T-10 has 23/1" splines all toploaders are either 1 1/8"-10 spline or 1 3/8" 10 spline

Thanks for the info Sam!!!!!! I currently have a Hurst shifter on it, so that is going to be changed over to the new tranny.
Bob, I thought the same thing as you, but unfortunately I have a T-10 in it, so maybe a previous owner changed out the toploader for some reason.
