Hello again All, I have yet another question... What would be the pros and cons of getting 2.5" exhaust pipes vs. getting 2.25" exhaust pipes? I'm talking about the entire piping system after the header collector. The engine is a 289 stock 2bbl. Future plans would be a 302 extensivly modified crate motor. I want to get the exhaust done soon because there is a leak in both of the current mufflers. I figure I might as well get the entire piping system done as well with an x-pipe. So I would greatly appreciate your guys' help regarding the pipe sizes and the pros and cons to those sizes. Thanks in advance. Regards, Erik

Eric if your going to be putting the hole system now. Then go with the 2.5 mandrel bent pipes. The mandrel bent pipes have a more smooth bend, and the 2.5 will not be to big for the 289.And will work great on the 302.Its expensive to get a good exhaust system so try and do it once.Go with some good mufflers too, like flowmasters or dyno flows.------------------ 65 Coupe with a stock 1969 351w, Edelbrock RPM intake,carter625cfm,shorty Hedmen hedders,Black Magic electric fan, stock C4,peg leg 8" 2:80,Big Boss 429 hood scoop,Cragers SS,Black Suede finish. https://mustangsandmore.com/ubb/Fastymz.html MEM#1240

Definitely 2.5"Keep in mind, local muffler shops can't do mandrel bends. You'll have to order those pipes. The tailpipes are generally the most restrictive part of the system, so mandrel bends are a MUST have item. Flowmaster sells these for 65-73 mustangs for around $100 per pair... which is money well spent. Don't get extra long mufflers. They don't fit in the confines of a mustang. Regular 3-chamber Flowmasters don't fit. If you want 3-chambers, you'll have to order the 5.0 mustang mufflers. They are shorter. You may have to settle for the lead pipes being "muffler shop" specials. I don't know of any of these that can be ordered mandrel bent. Definitely get the tailpipes! Mike, here in Reno the local hotrod exhaust shop.Dose have both aluminizad pipe as well as mandrel bent.He did my system which only has one real bend in it.Erik call around and see if any one in your area has them. And you cant beat the price of the flowmaster tail pipes. The only way I could use my three cambers was to have turn downs at the axle.Which is what I was looking for anyways. ------------------ 65 Coupe with a stock 1969 351w, Edelbrock RPM intake,carter625cfm,shorty Hedmen hedders,2.5 exhaust,Flowmasters,Black Magic electric fan, stock C4,peg leg 8" 2:80,Big Boss 429 hood scoop,Cragers SS,Black Suede finish. https://mustangsandmore.com/ubb/Fastymz.html MEM#1240

Are you SURE they do mandrel bends? That's extremely rare for a regular muffler shop. If so, great!Mandrel bends require a "mandrel"... which looks like a giant segmented worm made of metal that goes inside the pipe during the bending process to keep it from crushing. Beyond this, I'm not sure what type of bender is required... Mike, they are the smooth bends I've seen, the tube stays almost the same size from start to finish of the bend.I'm not sure if he dose it there,or if he buys the pipe already bent and cuts it to fit.I'd say I'm sure it is.But I've been wrong before,I'm sure my wife would tell you.------------------ 65 Coupe with a stock 1969 351w, Edelbrock RPM intake,carter625cfm,shorty Hedmen hedders,2.5 exhaust,Flowmasters,Black Magic electric fan, stock C4,peg leg 8" 2:80,Big Boss 429 hood scoop,Cragers SS,Black Suede finish. https://mustangsandmore.com/ubb/Fastymz.html MEM#1240

I made it my business to know what a mandrel looks like, after I made a phone call to an exhaust shop. They told me they had a mandrel, but when I went down there to take a look, it was a regular pipe bender. I'm still looking! Just for the hell of it, here's a pic of a mandrel. It's a beaut, ain't it??

What's the largest dimameter anyone has successfully done in a 65-68 cv? Flowmaster does not do cv's according to an article in M&Fords. A co. here supposedly does mandrel bending but have yet to go there. The flow pipes In the article were in sections, which is all right, but would prefer one piece.

Dr. Gas I believe is the name. It seems rather expensive and there aren't really and curves to need a mandrel. A good muffler shop should be able to make the x pipes. I went with just the H pipe. I know Mustangs Plus has them but I'm sure other do as well.
