I installed an Auto Meter water guage in my '67 and am running it using the stock wiring and a new sending unit. For some reason it shows the temp for about 10 seconds then goes to zero. It then constantly jumps between zero and the original reading. Takes about 1/2 second for it to show the temp and go back to zero. It's almost as if a circuit breaker is popping and resetting. I've checked all connections and they appear OK. Any ideas? Thanks! Brian Bulow

Most Fords have an instrument cluster regulator that regulates the voltage to the guages. I believe this "regulator" actually turns the voltage on and off to keep approx 5 volts to the original guages. I guess the originals are so slow, you don't notice when the voltage goes on and off. To test my theory, find a 12 volt source (or whatever Autometer recomends) different from the original guage and see if it fixes it.

Thanks Franklin. I wasn't aware of the regulator. I'll bypass it and see what happens. I'll post the results here.THANKS! Brian

Franklin, You were correct. I did some further reading in a manula I have and it turns out the factory guages are fed 5 volts in short bursts. The voltage regulator takes 12 volts and sends short bursts of 5 volts for about 1/2 second each. Like yuou said, the factory guages don't show this, but the auto meter sure did!I ran 12 volts to the AM guage and it works super! Thanks for the help!! Regards, Brian
