how can you tell if your neutral safety switch is going bad or is not operable? my problem seems to be that sometimes when i go to start the 68 gt/cs w/c-4 auto i have to PLAY with the shifter to start sometimes.also my shifter is a little sloppy, needs new bushings, could this be the problem also. i have a console also. not sure what action to take. thanks for any info or ideas you might have! ------------------

Fly, Sounds like you need to rebuild your shifter assembly/replace bushings. If you do not have the shifter all the way in park or in neutral, you can not start your Mustang. The console will not have any affect on the shift. I would rebuild the shifter if I was you. I had the same problem trying to start my car. After I rebuilt the shifter it started with no problem. Rebuilding it is easy and cheap. Those 2 bushings can either be bought from a Mustang parts supplier, or your local auto parts store will probabbly have some that will fit. The neutral safety switches rarely go bad.------------------ JT '68 Coupe w/351W [This message has been edited by JT (edited 08-16-2001).]

Fly, go with the shifter first since rebuilding it could not hurt. My first car did not have a neutral saftey, my second one did.. and so on, I must have moved up in the world.

ok, i took apart the shifter and to my surprise no bushings at all! now is there suppose to be a large washer where the inside bushing goes? also i think i better start looking for a selector housing because the detent plate is really chewed up and looks like someone did a little grinding on it.doesnt look to good.thanks agin!------------------

I don't think there is a washer that belongs in there. Mine had one on each side when I disassembled it, but I believe that is how the previous owner attempted to coorect the problem. I reassembled it with new bushings, and no washers. It is nice and tight feeling now.
