A friend of mine just bought what he was told was a 1968 289 out of a Mustang. The casting number on the block is C8AE 6015 B, the research I have done tells me it is 1968 302? And the block itself has 302 cast in the valley. Can anybody tell me how to figure out what the motor really is?

I'll bet it is a 289. Some 289's were built by Ford with the 302 block in 1968, from what I've heard on this site.

Find the casting number on the crank. 1M=289 2M=302. 289 has a 2.87 stroke and a 302 has a 3.00 stroke. Sounds like a 302 to me.

I have a 68 1/2 Futura Sport Coupe that has 302 stamped on the block and 289 stamped on the heads.. It also has power disc brakes, power steering and AC.. I have a hard time trying to match up parts because there was a lot of crossbreeding during late production during 68 1/2... and After checking the rod and crank #s, found out it is really a 289.. 289 emblem is also on the fenders by the way, but I had to be sure when rebuilding.
