I was cruzing on the highway last night breaking the new motor in on my 71 when all the sudden the dash and headlights started flickering and then went out. The car still runs so I pulled the hazzards and they worked so I limped her home. It has a brand new alt on it and I am wondering if this could be headlight switch related? How do I test the switch?

The switch is harder to test than it is to replace and fairly cheap, but before replacing it you might wanna cycle the dimmer switch a few times to see if the lights flash or come on, many times a dimmer switch will die. If you have aftermarket high power headlights a relay system will keep this from happening again. I like using two, one for high, and one for low and wire them so the low beams stay on when the high beams are on. Hope this aint too much info .

Doc, I have a good wiring diagram for putting in relays, but don't think it is set-up for keeping the lows on while the highs are on. Got a good diagram you can post? I am planning on taking my time putting it in, don't want to screw anything up that is working fine now, and when I do put it in, I don't want anybody to know its there.I think headlight switches go for about 10 or 12 bucks, and the dimmer switch is about 4 or 5 bucks at most places like Autozone.

I aint good at recording the things I do . I wire the low beams direct to the relay and run the brights through the dimmer to the relay so it just adds the brights. You could do it with one relay but I did it as an after thought and used two rather than figure it out. I also added heavier wire to the headlights from the relay so I could use the lights full potential. I'm old "I need light" !
