What would I have to change/modify when changing over from a 289 to a 351w?? (I have a C-4 tranny also.)------------------ Joe Fields 68 Fastback 289ci bored .030 over C-4 "Never play leapfrog with a unicorn."

this is essentially a bolt in swap. you use the 66-70 motor mounts,a set of swap headers from hedman, short or long your choice. the stock C4 bolts in place though you need the 157 tooth flywheel. you may need a hood scoop if you are using a taller than stock intake. use a radiator designed for a 69 mustang, its wider. you also want a least a 3 core radiator or a good aluminum one.

My 351 used the 289 flywheel (69 351 block) This topic came up a while back, here is a link to it https://mustangsandmore.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/004239.html I was also able to use hedman 289 headers, I did the swap before the 351 swap headers were available so I would recommend the swap headers, but if you already had some for the 289, you may want to try them. I had to modify the alternator bracket etc... because the 351 crank pulley uses 4 bolts unlike the 3bolt 289, and the 351 balancer stuck out farther. Although maybe I could have used the 289 balancer? ------------------ 67 Fastback - Arctic White Pearl paint 351W ,Trick Flow Aluminum Heads, Edelbrock TorkerII, Carter 750 CFM, Comp. It was on mine. I did this swap in the '66 last year. Using a performer rpm intake/750 holley, the stock hood cleared using a drop based aircleaner. Some of your existing 289 goodies will not fit the 351w. The intake, distributor, and oil pan are larger. Good luck, SteveW

the flywheel will work fine. the balance is the same, and the flywheel size and tooth count depends on the tranny bellhousing and starter placement more than anything else. btw, longtubes rock

Drivetrain will fit fine, as long as it can take to new h.p. and torque. What heads/cam and compression are you gonna run in the 351w?SteveW

search the wrecking yards under the hoods of 73 and later trucks and vans. many of them had the 351w.
