I have an automatic in my stang with the factory shifter. My question is ther are two dots for drive and a low gear. I cant tell the difference between the two dots, it seems to shift the same and high gear is no different. Its no big deal but I have always wondered what the deal was.

As I understand it, if you have an original C4 from your stang, the small dot is drive, and the large dot does not include the 1st (?) gear. After X date, C4s were changed and this is reversed, and the large dot is for drive. The current C4 in my '66 is actually out of a '73 Lincoln and has the large dot for drive. Put your tranny in the small dot and accelerate hard enough that you can feel the shifts. Then do the same for the large. You should notice a difference in the quantity of shifts. There are others here that can give you a bit more detailed info I am sure! but that's the idea.

one position starts the car out in second gear. it was for use will driving in the snow or other low traction conditions so you wouldnt spin the tires and lose control of the car. the valve body or the whole trans may have been changed to the later C4 which does not have the snow drive.
